Science and research

At MHRA-NIBSC we undertake scientific research which underpins our efforts towards the standardisation and testing of vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics. These projects cover a range of disciplines, including Advanced Therapies, Analytical Sciences, Bacteriology, Biotherapeutics, Diagnostics and Virology. Our expert capabilities are critical to ensure regulatory readiness for innovative products, across the product lifecycle (development, manufacture, licensure and safe use). Maintaining this globally recognised expertise in biological medicines and diagnostics is central to the agency’s preparedness to deal with pandemics, safety issues with biological medicines (including adverse events or contaminations) and counterfeit or falsified medicine identification.

Our research work is supported through peer reviewed funding awards from Department of Health and Social Care and external funding agencies. We collaborate nationally and internationally with academia, manufacturers and other scientific organisations. We welcome new collaborations that address scientific questions of regulatory importance pertaining to biological medicines and diagnostics. Please contact individual scientists directly or at enquiries@nibsc.org on more cross-cutting and general research questions.
