At the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency our research programme plays a leading role in protecting and improving public health and supporting innovation.
At the South Mimms laboratories of the Science, Research and Innovation group we develop biological standards and reference materials, test biological medicinal products and carry out underpinning scientific research; activities that are essential for making sure the biological medicines patients receive are safe and effective.
Our collaborative, multi-institutional 3-year PhD studentships offer an opportunity for you to develop knowledge and expertise in biological medicines and gain valuable experience working across the MHRA and the partner University.

About the South Mimms laboratories
Our scientists work at the interface of industry, academia and medicines regulation, collaborating with manufacturers, regulators and control laboratories and researchers worldwide to support the use and development of biological medicines. Because of their specialist expertise, our scientists are often required to respond rapidly to public health emergencies, such as pandemic influenza, or safety issues associated with the use of biologics.
We also help to develop national and international policies related to the use of biological medicines, sharing our knowledge and expert advice with key committees and policy making bodies.
To allow us to protect and improve public health we receive some core funding from the UK Department of Health and Social Care, and also supply reference materials and undertake control testing. Our scientific research is supported by external research grant funding secured from a range of international as well as national grant awarding bodies.
